APPLICATIONS IN THE ARTS I - ART411

This course is a beginning art course which introduces the students to a variety of art mediums and techniques, including drawing, color theory, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Students who successfully complete this course will earn .5 high school credit.

MS STEM ROBOTICS - TT0800

In this course students will learn foundational robotics and programming skills. Students will design, build, and program real-world objects using the Engineering Process.

COMPUTER ESSENTIALS - BUS002

This course is designed to provide students with technology skills required for graduation. It is a comprehensive course where students apply computer skills to business and personal applications. It emphasizes learning to type by touch and other data input technologies. Presentation skills, databases, spreadsheets, charting and word processing skills will be introduced. Students who successfully complete this course may obtain .5 high school credit by completing the Fast Start Request Form and turning it in to the high school counseling office any time between the 9th-12th grade. Once the course is transcripted, it cannot be removed.

INVENTION AND INNOVATION - CTM002/CTM003

Students will study the history of inventions and innovations, including their impact on society. They will learn about the core concepts of technology and the various approaches to solving problems, including engineering design and experimentation. Students will use their creativity in the invention and innovation of new products, processes, and determine how various inventions and innovations impact their lives. This course is aligned with the standards-based national model program that was developed in collaboratation and consultation with the STEM Center for Teaching and Learning.

HUMANITIES 7 - ELA709/ELA710

Seventh-grade  Humanities encompasses a comprehensive, rigorous curriuclum. The Common Core State Standards directs and supports the content for English-Language Arts, U.S. History from inception through reconstruction and Washington State History. Washington State History is a required course for graduation. The Humanitities' focus lends itself to authentic, deep learning and critical thinking skills via historical, scholarly research, reading, debate, historical fiction, enduring understanding and asking and explorting deep questions.

HUMANITIES 8 - ELA809/ELA810

Eighth grade Humanities covers both Language Arts and World Studies content, while integrating technology and information skills. Expectations for students are high; students will be consistentlyy challenged. Common Core State Standards and ELA skills and concepts are connnected to and enhanced by combining writing, reading, speaking, listening, art, video clips, and primary sources. An emphasis will be placed on the following skills: research, effective communication (both writitten and oral), problem solving and cirtical thinking through project-based learning. The eighth grade year-long curriculum covers Ancient Civilizations. This includes pre-history (the time period before written records) & early humans, life on the Fertile Crescent, ancient Equpty, Rome, Greece, China and the European Middle Ages. Our overarching, yearlong essential questions are: How does understanding the past help us to understand the present?

This course series is for students reading more than two years below grade level who need intensive support or whose specially designed instructional needs can be met with this service. The focus will be on building basic skills students need to move on to core language arts supported by the reading/writing essentials class.  In this two-period block, students will learn fundamental language arts skills from the foundations of the sounds and meanings of words to the structures of the language and the basics of reading comprehension and essay writing.  Students will engage in activities that enhance phonemic awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary and word attack skills, spelling conventions, reading strategies, and the organization and production of writing.  Students will read fiction and non-fiction texts.  Though the class is highly structured, students will have opportunities to work with partners, evaluate their own progress, set goals, and receive differentiated help on areas of need.  Students will be placed in the appropriate course based on assessment data and/or IEP need, where applicable.  Please see your school counselor for placement.

This course is designed to provide students with technology skills required for graduation. It is a comprehensive course where students apply computer skills to business and personal applications. It emphasizes learning to type by touch and other data input technologies. Presentation skills, databases, spreadsheets, charting and word processing skills will be introduced. 

ETHNIC/CREATIVE COOKING - HOM894

Students will explore the role of cooking in different cultures.  In this course, students will cook foods from different cultures.  They will learn proper etiquette for dining in different contexts.

FOODS-FADS-FINANCE - HOM893

This is a semester course consisting of introductions to clothing, career exploration, basic nutrition, food preparation, family relationships, and money management.  The class is project-and activity-oriented.

INTRO TO TECHNOLOGY - IAT891

The focus of this course is on understanding general technology, with additional study of the special technologies of communications, construction, manufacturing, and transportation. A common thread running through this course is problem solving: inventing, designing, and carrying solutions through to development.
