The AP Art History course prepares students for the AP Art History Exam. The course covers art from the Paleolithic period through postmodernism and is designed to provide students with the same material covered in an introductory college course in art history.

For those students without plans for advanced schooling, it offers a program of study to increase skills, improve techniques, and explore new media. The main focus of the portfolio will be in 2-dimensional design.

Course Description: 

Applications in the Arts III-IV builds on the skills taught in Applications in the Arts I-II. 10th grade students will receive instruction in art, home and multimedia. All courses are directly integrated with themes and such products as quilts, hand-made books, board games, and a dramatic “touring company.”

Course Description: 

An exploratory course taught as a survey of the building’s visual arts offerings.  Units address elements of art and principles of design as they relate to both two and three-dimensional work.  Human experience and historical significance of the visual arts are also addressed.  Students will learn basic techniques and processes in class and use a variety of media which may include:  tempera paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, pastels, oil pastels, charcoal, crayon, printmaking inks, colored pencils, pens, clay, plaster, others.

This is an advanced course in problem solving related to instruction in canvas stretching and preparation, oil techniques, mixed media, and a variety of illustration techniques which involve drawing, collage, photo transfer, encaustic, and resist media.
This course is repeatable for credit with instructor’s permission.

IB ART STUDIO I-II (SL) - ART898/ART899

Course Description: 

This course is designed specifically for the studio-oriented art student, including opportunities for structured learning and studio work of a more experimental nature. Also, emphasis will be on comprehension of the elements and principles of art and how this understanding allows for a means of individual expression and creativity. Students will be required to keep an Investigation Workbook (IWB) that is both internally and externally assessed. Students will prepare an exhibition of their own work for the one or two year course, and discuss their work with an assigned IB Examiner from outside of the Kent School District. (This course should be attempted in one year, only if the student has previously taken art courses, is advanced in technique, and highly motivated to do the work.)
